Daring Bakers - Challenge EIGHT!

And the challenge for December is .... a French Yule Log!

Yes! Here is my attempt. All friggin parts of it: Mousse, creme brulee insert, crisp insert, ganache insert (which you can't really see, shame really) hazelnut dacquoise and dark-choc icing. And strange hemispheres on the top. I started off with only 2 (only had one Lindt ball left) but then realised that it ... umm ... didn't look quite right and then had to go buy another box of the stuff to make it a total of 4!

Anyway, I hope you like it as much as I want to destroy it. OH HOW I WISH TO RECIPROCATE ALL THE PAIN IT HAS CAUSED ME. I am so damn tired. I don't even want to taste it LOL.

This challenge was brought to you by the letter F. For fun. Not. Ok really now: This month's challenge is brought to us by the adventurous Hilda from Saffron and Blueberry and Marion from Il en Faut Peu Pour Etre Heureux. They have chosen a French Yule Log by Flore from Florilege Gourmand. Happy now demon program?

Something for you to live on;). I think your log looks fabulous. I still have mine in the freezer and I am done just cleaning the stuff.

Aparna Balasubramanian 30 December 2008 at 1:29 am

This challenge seems to have taken the mickey out of you.:) But all I can see is a very nice cake and I can see the ganache insert too.

Sleep off the tiredness but please taste your cake. I'm sure you'll feel the effort was worth it.

Best wishes for the festive season and a Happy New Year.

Cheers,

This was a long laborious challenge. I took my log to church because I couldn't bring myself to cut into the damn thing! They had NO trouble and it was gone very quickly.

Yours looks GORGEOUS!

I hope you update once you have tasted it. The ganache might slightly disappear, but I found it still to be quite tasty, and the mousse is excellent. I'm proud of you for making two attempts until you got it right.

I think your log is really beautiful! So neat and pretty... congratulations, though you're not so happy :-)

Vera 30 December 2008 at 3:40 am

Your log looks wonderful, Ahmad! I hope you will taste it :)

Hilda 30 December 2008 at 3:42 am

Oh dear, even though your log looks just perfect, I'm afraid to find out the particulars of all the pain it caused. That certainly was not our intention. I hope when your feelings of hate subside a little you'll at least give it a taste, I bet it's wonderful. Have a Happy New Year.

Unknown 30 December 2008 at 4:04 am

Well, it looks just wonderful even if it did cause some stress! I hope it tastes to your satisfaction.

Gfron1 30 December 2008 at 4:17 am

I think yours turned out great. I'd love to see more pics of it.

Rachel J 30 December 2008 at 5:10 am

I just couldn't complete this challenge but yours is amazing!! How did you get your icing in such a pretty pattern?? Congrats, really! :)

Anonymous 30 December 2008 at 5:11 am

Stress or no stress, your Yule Log looks fantastic!

silverrock 30 December 2008 at 5:47 am

Woah! That yule-log looks beautiful! Way to go on this month's challenge :)

Olga 30 December 2008 at 6:51 am

omg, this is the most hilarious post ever!!! I hope you ended up tasting the yule log at the end.

P.S. I feel exactly the same about the demon program :)

Andreas 30 December 2008 at 7:40 am

Great looking log. :)

And demon programs are your friend. Just don't splash them with water or feed them after midnight. No, wait. This applies to a different kind of demon, you weren't talking about, right?

raquel 30 December 2008 at 7:52 am

oh ahmad...you log looks wonderful! a perfect half dome shape. i am sure whatever pain you had to go through making it will be well worth it when you taste it ---or when other people taste it and compliment you. excellent job!

vibi 30 December 2008 at 8:40 am

I know it's an overused word... but I truly can't think of anything else but WOWWY! I'm floored! Bravooooo!

Who knew that a confection could bring out such strong emotions? :P

Looks great, though.

Arlene Delloro 30 December 2008 at 10:17 am

Did you think it tasted good? I didn't make one and I'm wondering how you liked the texture, particularly of the creme brulee. It looks great.

PAM 30 December 2008 at 11:41 am

It turned out fabulous. Great job. You can be proud that you hung in there even though it was a daring challenge. Congratulations.

Amy 30 December 2008 at 12:37 pm

Ahmad, it did turn out lovely even if you do wish to smash it to pieces. May the new year and new challenges bring new joy,

Amy

Lol- I could entirely identify with your feelings about this dessert. It was two days of tears and stress in our house and I'm sorry to say mine didn't look as lovely as yours in the end, although it didn't look as bad as I feared it might halfway through. (Tasted nice, as it ought since my arteries have now clogged to dangerous, unprecedented levels). Well done... now vow with me... another 6 part DB challenge- NEVER AGAIN! ;)

Best wishes and smiles,
Sea

HAR! I wanna see the first one. :P

I think your finished log is absolutely stunning. You should make them each Christmas and sell them. (heeee!)

And you had better taste it! It's a cardinal sin to pass up all that chocolate. :P

xoxo

TASTE IT! It looks so beautiful, how could you not? : ) Great job!

hexe 31 December 2008 at 4:20 am

When I showed my mother the recipe, her comment was that if she went to so much trouble, no one was going to eat it - it was just to be admired :) Your Yule Log looks too good to put aside - dig in!

Anonymous 31 December 2008 at 4:31 am

Your yule log is beautiful! But I have to agree, it is a whole lot of trouble. I'm still working on posting mine. It's nowhere as pretty as yours :)

The Cherub's Craft Blog 31 December 2008 at 7:52 am

Your log looks beautiful. How can you not have tasted it yet - it tastes delicious.

Baker at Law 31 December 2008 at 9:57 am

Though you thought this challege was evil, your log looked really nice. As long as the finish product is great, no one knows the pain it caused you :-) I also like the Lindt's decorations. Great job and Happy New Year!

Cynthia's Blog 31 December 2008 at 10:27 am

I feel like you. But I gotta admit., it tasted great. For some reason, I couldn't see your photo, but can I leave my congrats just the same.

Laurie 31 December 2008 at 1:47 pm

It looks amazing, despite the trauma it obviously caused you! Now get back at it, and bite it...you know you want to ;)

Laura Rebecca 1 January 2009 at 1:47 pm

I know this was a difficult challenge but you did a beautiful job!

Anonymous 1 January 2009 at 11:12 pm

I know what you mean this was one massive recipe even if each element wasn't that hard BUT it takes some experience to figure out when to do each element and how they will combine together. I always like your comments in the DBers forum. Also I like your determination in this challenge. Happy NY to you and your family and friends.

Anonymous 2 January 2009 at 7:46 am

I'm right there with you on this one. I thought my kids were going to walk in one their mom, dead on the floor, clinging to her creme brulee insert. But alas, I lived to taste it, and I hope that you did too, because yours looks incredible.

Namratha 2 January 2009 at 10:29 am

All the pain was worth it ...or wasn't it? Your log is perfect!!! :)

Gretchen Noelle 2 January 2009 at 11:50 am

Lovely job. Hope you did actually enjoy the fruits of your labor in the end!

Maggie 2 January 2009 at 1:23 pm

If it caused you trouble it certainly doesn't show. I always notice how perfect your DB challenges look and this doesn't disappoint, it looks perfect! Have a Happy New Year!

Anonymous 2 January 2009 at 2:22 pm

Your log looks wonderful, even though I can tell from your hints that this was a real pain to make. Guess what? I agree! It was one heck of a tough recipe to make, and just before Christmas, too!

breadchick 3 January 2009 at 5:19 am

Incredible looking!

Anonymous 3 January 2009 at 7:13 am

I really hope you did taste it in the end. I looks fabulous! Great job.

Anonymous 7 January 2009 at 9:17 pm

Perfect look! (And yummy...)
